“Do not fade. Do not wither. Do not grow old…”

Christopher Hitchens| “If you want to be awe inspired..”

…If you want to be awe inspired, ladies and gentlemen, and let me say, let me just tell you that those of us who do not believe we are divinely created, let alone divinely supervised, are not immune to the idea of awe and beauty and the transcendent. Let me invite you to look for a moment at the pictures taken by the Hubble telescope. Some of you may have done it. If you haven’t done it now, or yet, do it soon…

The Great Gatsby| The best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool

“And I hope she’ll be a fool – that’s the best thing a girl in this world can be. A beautiful little fool.”
“All the bright, precious things fade so fast… and they don’t come back”.

Daisy understands the subordinate role that women —– especially wealthy women —– are expected to play. Among other things, they are expected to quietly tolerate the extramarital affairs of their spouses. Of course by revealing her opinion on the dynamics of gender and power, Daisy shows that she is not the flighty fool she sometimes masquerades as.

Pretty sad expectation, for a girl to be a beautiful fool is better than to know her own mind and be aware.

Passing through Trafalgar Square yesterday I over heard one of the street performers saying to a young girl (during his act) – “just remember, when you grow up. Just cry and men will give you money…”

Oh, to be a beautiful fool…
